Circus of life : IM 70.3 Putrajaya 2009

Posted by missjewelz on October 7, 2009

With the fun and chaotic aftermath of the IM70.3 Putrajaya my mind was pretty occupied with settling the result issue, plus other things. In other words, a bit serabut up here. And new things and issues keep popping up every second of the day. And just now an old friend buzzed me on YM telling me his 2 month engagement is off. I told him, move on. If you look back too long, you  might stumble again on your next step.

Some of my friends have been telling me that too, from time to time. Move on. There’s no point pondering too long , not worth it, etc. Truly true. You gotta stay focus if you want to succeed in walking in and through this circus of life. The moment you need peace, chaos will come. The moment you thought you’re having fun, trouble steps in. Really bizarre and giving headache ! Annoying ain’t it?

Anyways, the IM70.3 Putrajaya was not exceptional. I did the relay. My team mates; Ish and AJ. Ish swam, I bike and AJ ran. All was generally ok for us, until the organizer published the unofficial result. My team DNFed. Wtf?…and then it nearly change to DQ (God knows why), but it didn’t. And on the official result posted on the web, the DNF status got retracted, and we got 1st place ! Circus bin Cartoon.. funny kan? and on top of that, they added a bloody 47 minutes to my bike time out of no where.. Confusing. I did 3 hours flat on the bike for the 90km bike course, timing on 1st unofficial result was correct 3:00:58.. The one on the official result was 3:47:00.. where in the world did that 47 mins came from ? This is so bizarre.

Anyways real official result team relay :

Pos Bib Fullname Class Country Swim Cycle Run Time
1 300 Ishal ,Julie,Ahmad Jauhari Relay MYS 0:57:03 3:00:58 2:04:48 6:04:54
2 294 Ubo Robert Weitz Relay 0:41:26 3:32:55 2:39:42 6:56:56
3 291 Nurina,Hadi,Kash Kasiri Relay MYS 0:54:33 3:36:44 2:35:36 7:09:27
DNF 215 Khan Shiraz Mikael Relay MYS 0:54:27 3:41:42 2:37:53 7:19:33

My team got 1st place after unfairly being DNFed. No prizes at all for relay, no big deal ! But still tak puas hati because the organizr keep screwing up the results !

The headache and weirdness caused by the timing system used this time around by the organizer is indisputable ! My friend Siok Bee and Yip got DNFed ! Come on, these are not newbie athletes. They did not make any mistakes, followed the course correctly, and this is what we get… some screwed up result..

There were just too many mismanagement, mistakes and glitches by the organizer last Sunday. I can’t list them down just yet because I am already seeing stars as I type these paragraphs. But nevertheless , the sportsmanship and passion for triathlons and multi-sports saved me and the rest of our friends that day. We did have fun on the race course alright. I had fun too on the bike. Can’t wait to share it here. But in another post. Just a bit too tied up at the moment.

Port Dickson Triathlon 2009 and some TRI tips to try !

Posted by missjewelz on July 10, 2009

This will be my 3rd year doing the PD tri. :) 1st one was in 07. I am not  so very excited or looking forward to this race (even though I am going )! .The Ironman hangover was more than I would have imagined and I am still recovering my knees.. It is somewhere near 90% recovered. I can almost feel it.And since I haven’t been pushing too hard on training, (to supplement the knees) especially the running part, I won’t push during the race this Sunday.

For those who haven’t join PD Triathlon, and have no idea what the course is like, try to visualize this ;

swim

‘pretty calm’ and not too rough ! expect to swim in a J(or L)- shape loop

bike

nice rolling route, no major climbs

run

straight out, and flat ! imagine boulevard between Putrajaya mosque to PICC and back. straight, flat and hot too !!!!!

Strategy and plans (not that there are plenty!)

I can imagine how hot its gonna be on the run route on Sunday.. Which reminds me to bring my cap and ice water !  I am excited to check out how my physique and mind will score this weekend. But plan is to just pace myself and not push too hard.  I haven’t had any open water swim since Ironman. But I hope it won’t be any problem.Plan for quick transitions in both T1 an T2..Bike and run; keep a pretty  average cadence throughout, giving an extra effort on climbs, follow through on the descends.  Run; pace ma self. Watch out for potential age groupers ahead for me and not get too excited. Last year I missed Michelle Looi by a second. I ONLY saw her the last 100m , chased her, and caught up, but was a second too late. I’ve a foto of me chasing her. Boy, I looked so funny in the foto !

datz Michelle at the front. Spot me.

How I don’t pressure myself during races

Just focus on the course, the race, myself. Keep up a cheery mood, having the energy to shout a Hi! to a friend during the bike course and  you’ll find the run course pretty relaxing. A quick transition would help too.. ! Don’t waste too much time at transition!

I never actually set a specific target (say, doing a sub 3 for OD, a sub 7 for 1/2 IM or a sub 15hrs for IM)..In my ‘not -too- bad’ to ’successful’ race results so far, I’ve always stick to this principle. I try to train smart, stick to the program. When it comes to race day, I should be ready after the weeks of training. Let the training speaks for itself now knowing that you still have some element of control during the race day itself.

It doesn’t (really) matter to have people overtaking you (unless you’re aiming for podium LOL!). I usually start slow on each leg. E.g. I don’t start sprinting the moment I get on the bike, or the moment I get out of T2(bike-run transition). Start slow, pick up in the middle and finish ‘em hard.

I just happened to be lucky that I did a sub 3 in A Famosa Tri last year, a 3:01 in PD last year and a 6:25 in Desaru Last year. Basically, when its my first time doing certain distances in a certain race event, I won’t put much hassle in having a target time. It is a hassle and mind obstacle then, when I put a target, and not achieve it. My 1st OD, 1/2 IM, 1st Ironman ; no target. But for Ironman, since there is a cut off for swim, I need to finish by 2 hours to be safe. That was my target swim time for IM. Total swim time for Ironman , 1hr 35mins. I know its slow compared to my other mutant swimmer friends. They swim like fish !  I swim like a tortoise ! But anyways, it was home run for me in Langkawi this year after I finished my swim leg even though (again) I had no specific target time for the Ironman distance. I had no pressures on me. I just totally enjoyed, or tried to enjoy the course.Same goes to the other races ,so far.

out of the water. finally !

Ironman Langkawi 2009: out of the water. finally !

me checking out my time, for the 1st time ! Its a suspense ...

me checking out my time, for the 1st time ! Its a suspense ...

1 happy Julie ! 1hr 35mins ! Incredible enuff for me ! i was beaming with joy hacing in mind that i have another 180km + 42 km to go !!!

1 happy Julie ! 1hr 35mins ! Incredible enuff for me ! i was beaming with joy having in mind that i have another 180km + 42 km to go !!!

For my 3rd PD outing  , I would have to take it easy due to my condition now. So no pushing hard for me! Gotta remind myself that !

Oh yeah, usually when it gets pretty hot on the bike/run course, do make a pit stop at the water stations and pour some water on your head. The cooling effect has a tremendous positive significance to your  performance .Have a laugh too! yeah, sounds funny.. i usually laugh during my training, especially when there’s a serious dogfight going in between you and your training mate. You break the seriousness and tense by laughing ! makes me feel less tired. No, seriously ! it works! Laugh for a reason, or look for a reason to laugh . Its not that hard ya know..hahahah..

If you feel good during at the midpoint of a the swim/bike/run leg, safely expect that the second half would look good as well. Remember you gotta learn the skill of ‘controlling’ yourself, and how controlling too much isn’t as good as you might have thought it would. Push 1 ‘gear’ up, gradually.. don’t push from the 2nd to 4th ‘gear’ abruptly.. or else you might find yourself slowing down after that !

Another tip ; I’m not so techy and gadgety, but I can’t deny the importance of having gadgets.  A quick revelation here; I never owned a bike meter/ heart rate monitor until recently. I borrowed them from my ex ! That was until recently when I got myself a Suunto t3c. I do use these gadgets time to time for training and racing. But most time, I would not bother the meter on my bike or the watch on my wrist. I don’t do heart rate monitors as well.  I remember Powerman Malaysia last year, my 1st Powerman Duathlon. I had a meter on the bike, and I can’t help but keep looking at it every other minute. It is a distraction in a way.. I couldn’t concentrate on the race ! I tried not looking at it and ignore it. Boy , it wasn’t easy.I remember  going  for a long ride with Shazly, Stupe , Fong and Rashid.. I was wearing  my bling bling white leather Guess watch!  So unconventional? U may think so.. but I don’t ! 1st Conclusion to this paragraph; what ever you don’t do during/in your training, don’t bother doing it in a race. Its more of an annoyance, really. For my bike, training, usually I don’t have a meter on the bike.., so it doesn’t matter to me.. speed to me is subjective, tho time to time it is nice to check out what’s your average . 2nd conclusion : focus on the race and listen to your body. This is my point of view !

during 1 of my rides ! meter says SLEEP !

during 1 of my rides ! meter says SLEEP !

I don’t have to be conventional to have achieved what I have achieved so far in my sporting attributes.  You can achieve a certain peak by blending a certain amount of recipe.. and when you have achieved that peak, move on to the next level. Tweak that recipe. :) I’m tweaking mine for my next Ironman. And I am looking forward and pretty excited for it !

To all of you doing the race this weekend in PD, whether 1st timer or no, I wish you all the best. Don’t forget to say Hi! to me !!!!

Some Tips for Towerthon ! KL TOWERTHON !!

Posted by missjewelz on February 26, 2009

Salam and Hi! all ! This may come in a bit too late for training tips, but since I got a few SMSes from my friends asking me how I trained and tackle the KL Towerthon last year(2008), might as well I share with you guys. Nothing much really, just the things that I do to prepare for towerthon. Other athletes may have their own ways.

How long did I prepare for Towerthon ?

Around a month and a half before the race.

How frequent was the training session ?

2-3 times a week. Max : 4 times.

How long per session ?

Average 40mins- an hour

Where do I usually train ?

- Uni stairs..huhuhu..steep and long !

- Batu Caves stairs

- KL Tower stairs (they’re usually open 3-4 days prior to race day. call the organizer to check when they are open ok. Security purpose and also for the technician to switch on the ventilator. )

- hostel stairs (yeap, late night when others are studying..hahaha.. and they’ll be like ‘what is this girl doing running up and down the four-storey building!’)

 - also dont forget to do flats/rubber track for recovery

-hills

- gym for strength training

Any other tips ?

Training

yeah, if this is ur 1st time doing the towerthon and just wanna feel how towerthon is different from other road races, I suggest that you aim to train and finish the race injury free. it is best that during training you run up the stairs step-by-step. Not 2 steps all the way or else you’ll fatigue and tire even before half-way before the tower head during the race.

There are 2 type of stairs in KL Tower. 1- the normal long short flight of stairs you normally see in fire emergency exits, i.e. the ones in tall office buildings. The second type are the shorter but wider type, the ones you sometimes find at parking lots. I may not be very accurate in my description, to be sure just go to KL Tower for your training okay. You will have an advantage over other runners.

The stairs are generally narrow. And you have thousands of runners running to the top from 1 door at the bottom of the tower to the last door at the top of  TowerHead. Expect a few landings where you have to take  a new set of stairs. The stairs are not in spiral , so no worries. Or else you’ll be dizzy by the time you reach the top !

During my experience training in the tower, when no one was there except for me and a few friends, you will have ample of space, the stairs railings are dry and you can easily grip and hold them everytime you turn or want to support yourself to speed up. Race day : railings are wet ! So its very dangerous to depend on them for grip and support as you might slip and fall.

Race day

Before flag off :

Go to the loo ! There might not be enough mobile toilets. Guys : do what u should do.. Ladies: there are toilets in AMBANK building across the road from start line, and also Shell Petrol Station which is adjacent to AMBANK building. AMBANK building is the huge white building with mirror windows at the front, plus the big yellow-orange camel.

Hydrate yourself well. PowerGels for energy. You can bring your own water for the run. But you’ll be very tired holding them coz you really need your arms to help you swing your body upwards during the stairs-run ! They have water station during the race ok, yeah, at the stairs itself.

The hill climb towards KL Tower base :

This is where everyone is tricked to go super speedy on the hill climb. They forgot about the stairs !  Last year I just went steady on the hill climb as I did not want lactic build ups before the hitting the stairs. So guys and girls, steady on the hill climb. Plenty of time (and stairs) to pump those muscles. I know you have been training hard. Don’t get over excited looking at your training partners or rivals speeding up from the beginning. You may want to save some surprises for later. Ahha !

Escalator :

You will pass through a flight of escalato before entering the emergency door.  Again, avoid the 2 steps at 1 go. climb the stairs 1 by 1..’step by step ! oohh baby !!’ (NKOTB)

Inside the KL Tower

It will be humid and you will find yourself hyperventilating. Your hate rate shooting up like krazee. The best thing is to pace yourself FROM THE START LINE.  Avoid pulling the railings coz they might be wet and slippery. Just focus in finishing the run. I did not waste any breath or saliva talking to my friends during the climb coz ever breath counts. Penat tau kalau cakap. Pace yourself well. If you find your way blocked by a bigger person just go in between that person and the railing if there are still space. Or else just kindly push the person to the right/left with ur hands to give yourself some space to pass through.Stopping/walking kills the speed, at least for me.Watch out for wet/slippery stairs and also used water bottles/water caps.

Prepare to run on all 4 extrimitie (2 hands + 2 legs ). yeah, i was on all 4 towards the end of the stairs towards towerhead. It helped !

The towerhead

Towards the towerhead , where you feel like you’re all max out, just sacrifies some more  by sprinting at towerhead by.. TH1, TH2, TH3. And finito !

Finishing

Smile ! a lot of photographers and friends with cameras waiting for you !

Other experience :-

Jittery on race morning despite the ample training and prep. I also included gym/weight training as part of prep.Just make sure you don’t do 2 intensive sessions back to back. Your legs and knees need rest too. stretching is important, so do not NOT stretch. So, stretch ya  but dont over do it too !

The flag off is according to age group. So listen well to the announcer what time your flag off is.To be safe dont wander off once ur at the start area !

I was excited and yet ‘afraid’ i might be left far behind my stronger and fitter friends. At the hills, they were attacking and maintaining the quick-to-fast pace. No problem for me, I just paced to myelf and does not matter if the photographer took a shot of you BEHIND your friend.

At the stairs I did not see any of them because they are well into their attack plan. Come second half of the climb, I was actually passing them 1 by 1. I was already climbing slow at that time but they were struggling a bit at that time. I remember passing 2-3 national athletes who were close to each other. They were surprised as myself when I over took them. See, I told you, PACE yourself well from the beginning and take care of your breathing ; LONG , DEEP , CONSISTENT AND CONTROLLED. You should look up and learn how to breathe and maintain your heart during intensive exercise.

Climbing on all 4 was a fun experience me. I was practically crawling towards the end of the stairs towards the towerhead.

You go down after the race using the lift back to the lobby where you will check out your results. I came in 15th with the time : 20mins 44secs , a mere 7 seconds behind Stephanie Chok, national triathlete (her tme 20:37). (no, not that i am fit, but maybe she did not prepare well or else she would have been much faster than this ok. ahhaha!!) She came in 14th !

Top men result : Julius Kangethe from Kenya 13:55, top Malaysian man : Shahrudin Hashim : 14:37. Top women : Yuan Yu Fang (national walker) – 15:58

Ok, i think thats it !! All the best to those taking part in KL TOWERTHON ! Race safe and smart. Don’t forget to enjoy the spectaular view at the viewing deck once u reach the top.

Unfortunately I won’t be able to join this year !! Next year perhaps !!

during 1 of my training session in KL Tower !

Great Eastern Pacesetters 30k 2009

Posted by missjewelz on January 17, 2009

Always the first race every year for the past 3 years. (this year my fourth!). Will be looking forward to meet my friends this Sunday ! :P Sporting events= social gathering= huha time with old and new buddies. To all friend taking part in this annual event, either for the first time or not, ALL THE BEST ! To volunteers who will be on duty starting today , thank you and good luck in advance !

For more info on Pacesetters Athletic Club Malaysia (PACM) please log on to www.pacesetters.com.my . I’ve been a member for 5 years now. :)

I have no target for this GE30k. The last 3 years i did the 20k category, and like every year,  there will be upgrades here and there. This upgrade from 20k category to 30k is as natural as the sun, f.o.c . And also part of my training. :P (natural as the sun ? hahah..)

This particular event will also be my debut event as part of the Powerbar Team Elite . Thank You Powerbar !! More info on Powerbar Malaysia at  www.powerbar.com.my

Those who never checked out and tried the route for this Sunday’s run, another all the best. It would be too late for tips for training..  still not too late to stop me from sharing some points :-

1. be prepared mentally for a hilly course

2. imagine for endless rolling hills

3. don’t rush or sprint at the start line unless you’re really fit or targeting for PB/podium. expect some pushing here and there for the first 500-700m. Its pitch dark at some points, the first few km..so be careful yeah..

4. race your pace. for a 30k event, do ur own pace. too fast or to slow will not do you any good.

5. don’t skip the PowerZone or any water station. PowerBar endurance drinks will be served along the route.. drink em !

6. Listen to your body.. if your legs are stiff-ing , slow down, stretcchhh..or else you’ll risk having a  cramp !

7. Go easy down hill. Yes, when there’s climbing, there will also be descending. Thread your steps carefully.

8. Smile to camera man. There will be cameraman here and there along the run route. Be sure to say Cheese !!!

Nampak gayanye..

1.Kenyan runners dah mula nak join category half-marathon women.. biasanya men category and full-marathon category yg ramai org Kenya….adoi na….

2. overall time for the half -marathon women category semakin turun ..with both Amutha and Mariana adding 3 and 2 minutes (respectively) to their half-marathon time in 2007 (Amutha 2007- 1:39:25, 2008- 1:42:44)  (Mariana 2007 -1:42:06 , 2008-1:44:48).

3.If I ran.. and assuming my time is the same as last year KLIM halfmarathon  1:57:35.. my ranking this year bley dlm 10th or 11th place.. (wishful thinking !)..and assuming my time improve SIKIT around.. say..1-2 minutes.. ada kemungkinan diapit runner from France and Great Britain at 9th place..(wishful thinking lagi..)

4. Kehadiran Kenyan runners memang macam virus.. Sekali datang, berduyun-duyun lagi akan datang.. uhmm..talking about positive competition..! Should have another category just for international runners.. tapi tak boleh jugak.. runners from europe and states takde la beri challenge sangat..ewah…. hahahaha…

5. I’m running KLIM every 2 years.. I registered in 2006 tapi had to forego coz ada exam time tuh..(& family call) .Simpan lagi the running number in my clear folder. KLIM 2007, dapat lari my maiden KLIM with the time 1:57:35 ..  KLIM 2008, dapat free entry (and registeration fee refunded) coz dpt 3rd place for the circuit run.. Tapi..malangnye..had to forget KLIM tahun nie coz my exam clash ngan KLIM..yeah..exam on Sunday huh …adoi… tapi TAKPE……

6. I have..HAVE to improve my 21k time so that…so THAT next year (if i take part lah) boleh dapat at least top 12.. uhm..yeah… i tak takut kat international runners..haha… Thailand runners tak nampak kelibat sangat..10k runs, towerthon baru nampak ramai sketz.. if walking races..biasanya Hong Kong yang conquer..hahaha..no worries lah Malaysia. We can do it !!!!! Cuma jangan malas training ye kakak-kakak dan adik-adik !!! Yes we can ! (Barack Obama tagline.. ahhaha)

SEA Games : Sport-by-sport review (Malaysia)

- BASEBALL

THE men achieved their aim of winning a match for the first time, against Cambodia, but were simply outclassed in the rest of their games.

- CANOEING/KAYAKING

MALAYSIA failed to win a medal yet again as the kayak team members came last in most of their races, trailing the leaders in some cases by more than 30 seconds.-

EQUESTRIAN

QABIL Ambak Mahammad Fathil was the star of the show as he repeated his four-gold feat of 2001 by winning the individual and team gold in dressage and showjumping. The haul was double the target.

- FUTSAL

THE men’s team did on their debut what their football counterparts havedone only once since 1991 – reach the Sea Games final. They lost 5-0 to Thailand while the women, aiming for a bronze, finished fourth but the FA of Malaysia should pay serious attention to this version of football.

- HANDBALL

MALAYSIA came here with the ambition of winning a silver but the men and women’s teams both had to be satisfied with bronze with Thailand and Vietnam streets ahead.

-HOCKEY

THERE was never any doubt that the men, despite having a squad of mostly juniors, and women would deliver gold, only the margin of victories being a matter of interest.

- LAWN BOWLS

SITI Zalina Ahmad, the twice Commonwealth Games gold medallist, failed to break her Sea Games women’s singles jinx at the third time of asking but Malaysia still ended with four gold medals and the 4-1-1 haul is Malaysia’s second best in the Sea Games after the 5-1-0 achievement in 2001.

- POLO

THE polo team brushed aside the opposition as Malaysia defended the gold medal after 24 long years. Hopefully, it isn’t another 24 years before polo features again.-

ROWING

AS with their kayak counterparts, the rowers were left without a medal to celebrate as they too struggled to the finish line far adrift from the leaders.

- SAILING

MOHD Romzi Muhammad and Nurul Elia Anuar salvaged sailing’s blushes as they won just two of the five gold medals they had been counting upon.

- SHOOTING

NUR Suryani Taibi and Hasli Izwan Amir Hassan’s failure to defend their women’s 50m rifle prone and men’s 25m rapid fire pistol individual titles respectively meant the shooters fell short by two of their four-gold target. The two gold medals came from the women’s 50m rifle prone and men’s 25m rapid fire pistol team events.

- TRADITIONAL BOAT

RACEONE of the more peculiar sports to be held in the Sea Games saw Malaysia reach just one final where they finished last of six teams.

- TRIATHLON

KIMBELEY Yap successfully defended her triathlon gold as the Malaysians only won one of two events they targeted.Mariana Mohammad’s gold medal bid in the women’s duathlon was scuttled after a collision with a wayward motorcyclist during the bike-leg while the men were just not up to it.

- ARCHERY

MUCH hope was placed on the archers to bring home four gold medals after they surprised everyone by winning three in the last Sea Games. But sadly they returned with only two. The archers in the compound category were a let down as they finished with a only a silver and a bronze.

- BASKETBALL

HATS off to the women’s team. In an environment that was intimidating with a capacity 3,000-odd boisterous Thais booing and jeering them, they stood firm and delivered the gold by the narrowest of margins, winning 61-60.

- CYCLINGAL

THOUGH they managed to maintain the four gold medals from 2005, cycling failed to meet the target of six and this is bewildering given the quality of the cyclists.-

PETANQUE

MUCH hope was placed on Mohd Firdaus Adli Mohd Bakri who won a silver in Manila but he failed to live up to expectations and finished last. There were a three bronze medals but petanque is still not there.

- TENNIS

UNLESS the sport bucks up, Malaysian players will continue to be fodder for the Thai and Indonesian players.

- BILLIARDS & SNOOKER

SNOOKER may have given the nation its 64th gold medal but now that the six-year-wait for Sea Games glory has ended, the sport has to ensure that it grows from here.-

BODYBUILDING

THERE doesn’t seem to be life after Sazali Samad for the sport and blaming biased judging is beginning to sound like the boy who cried wolf

.- BOXING

A SPORT dominated by Thailand amidst biased judging claims, the two silver is a reasonable return considering the situation.

- GOLF

TWO bronze doesn’t augur well for a sport that is widely played in the country. It’s time to buck up.

- JUDO

ANOTHER sport that doesn’t seem to be moving despite its Olympic status.

-KARATE

EIGHT gold is the fantastic contribution but what makes it better is the introduction of new faces, which is a must if the sport is to continue growing.

- SILAT

FROM six gold medals in the World Championships to none in the Sea Games. How could this have happened?

- RUGBY

THE gold was in hand, after an excellent run in the group stages, but the team then lost to Philippines unexpectedly, and it was all over.

- TAEKWONDO

THE triumphs of Elaine Teo and Che Chew Chan hide a glaring truth – where are the other exponents?

- BEACH VOLLEYBALL

A BRONZE from Luk Teck Hua-Beh Shun Thing proves they are on track and more should be done for them to realise their potential.

- WEIGHTLIFTING

CHE Azrol Che Mat was denied by alleged biased judging but weightlifting also lacks a proper development programme.- WUSHUIF Manila was a nightmare, Korat ensured the exponents returned with better memories after winning two gold.

- FOOTBALL

AFTER so much of hope, they failed to qualify for the semi-finals and, obviously, football is still very much in the woods. The FA of Malaysia must start working now for the 2009 edition for as long as we don’t win Sea Games gold, what point is there to talk about conquering Asia.

- BOWLING

DESPITE tough lane conditions, the bowlers met their four-gold target.More was expected but we have to remember that bowling is one of very few sports in the Sea Games which is world class and winning four of 11 gold is commendable.

- GYMNASTICS

THE absence of Ng Shu Wai was felt as the men’s artistic gymnastics only contributed one gold but there is a silver lining here if the Malaysian Gymnastics Federation chooses to see it – work must start on developing a new batch of gymnasts. The rhythmic gymnastics competition was riddled with allegations of biased judging but a haul of four gold is still commendable.

- SQUASH

ELVINN Keo upset Nafzahizam Adnan to maintain Malaysia’s stranglehold in squash but there is serious danger the sport could be out in the cold if steps are not taken to get more countries from the region to play the sport.
